INTERFACE

  • Don't compare site to itself
  • Leaderboard only compares 'live' sites (remove deleted sites)
  • categorization of sites based on delicious tags
  • bookmarklet to allow site submission from the browser
  • Flickr-like interestingness calender (top site for each day, displayed as a thumbnail for that calendar day -- limit to sites that were added that day (new and hot))
  • More lists: New sites, hot today, hot this week, hot this month.
  • Site screenshot history as part of the /site/ profile page.
  • Eliminate duplicate history screenshots automatically
  • We gotta figure out how to present the rankings in a way that there's daily/weekly/monthly/yearly winners so people can brag and link back.
  • Displaying those honors on the site profile page (Winner: 3rd place, Oct 28th, 2007) is another. - mini feed
  • Site profile page should show/link to whoever submitted that link and link to the designer
  • People profile pages should show favorites, site they submitted, how they're doing, etc. I should be able to see who finds the best-liked sites on CS3 - find who is the best at rating sites (Who can pick the sites that the majority of people like)
  • On site submit page, add a way to copy the site being submitted url to the designer homepage w/o having to reenter it.
  • voting via keystroke
  • Zooming does not work well - the sites look pixelated on my screen
  • We should always zoom to the full 980 wide size, and not scale it down. Zoom would take over the whole screen and grey out the background - should work even on 1024 wide screens. Click on the zoom to close it, rather than having a grey frame around it to close.
  • Tags are disappearing from the top tags page as we get more sites - have a page to display them all. And make them look clickable on the permalink pages
  • Should be a way to do a combination search (to find inspiration sites for your design project) - in combination with the lightbox
  • Make the permalink pages wiki-ediable by users who have accounts - keep past versions of designer, title, design statement, etc.
  • Allow designers to assemble a portfolio of sites they have designed
  • How to deal with sites that go offline or disapper? Let designers upload screenshots of old sites that no longer exist?
  • Allow designers to have their own profile page on the site.
  • CommandShift4 (design patterns repository) should borrow workflow from http://kwout.com/

Lightbox

  • Allows you to mark a site as one of your favorites, so you can come back to it later
  • Automatically show the user's favorite sites for their session

Practical uses/business

  • I should be able to easily find and hire a designer for my project on Command Shfit 3
  • Each designer should get a landing page with their portfolio of sites that they designed on Command Shift 3
  • Set up a custom competition to test out design drafts during a web design process and get feedback from designers
  • Run a design contest
  • Sell products/services focused on the web design community
  • Allow design firms or other companies to place ads on specific tags or on the site
  • Sell ads using the deck

Publicity

  • Worst Site of the Web contest

Vote for Me widget

  • Allow people to add a vote for me widget on their site, which submits a CS3 vote for that site. Helps publicize CS3

Custom Battle

  • Submit a list of URLs to run a custom battle - good for testing out designs

Site profile page

  • site subscription (-email-+rss)
  • let people subscribe by email to changes to any websites. (use image diff or html diff to figure it out)
  • more stats (who it won against, who it lost against -- with small thumbnails and link to profiles)
  • Designer info/contact (collect post-add?)
  • Desginer statement, like a museum label: http://www.bampfa.berkeley.edu/education/kidsguide/labels/labels.html
  • -Comments on a site -(design hints & reviews from users)
  • Track redesigns, link to subpages in our system (and properly display their URLs)

Flagging

  • should have descriptive text
  • after flagging, a site skips this round & brings you a new vote
  • UNflag option, perhaps as a link in the history if flagging automatically skips current vote
  • Set the ignore option in the DB to remove sites from the flagged area, while preserving their flagging count.

user system to manage

  • sites I voted on & how they're ranking
  • sites I submitted & how they're ranking
  • my fave sites

!

Designer Credits / Artist Statement

  • Allow designers to take credit for their designs and add artist statements, which we can display on the site
  • use meta tags in the html to do so
  • for example:
  • Create a widget for a designer to add to their site that links to /shows all the sites they have designed

The Designer Duel! (a.k.a Lunchbreak duel!)

Since our audience is designers, it'd be such fun to let you challenge another site to a duel! Here's how it'd work:

  • you select a site to challenge
  • site owner gets an email (white glove slap)
  • if they accept, the duel date is selected, and the duel is at high noon
  • a special page with just those two sites is created, and for one hour, votes are taken
  • each person sends friends, site visitors, etc. to this page.
  • At the end of the hour, a winner is declared.
  • This victory (and loss) is forever emblazoned on the site's profile pages.
  • maybe: only let sites challenge others in their "rank class"
  • maybe make duels only last 1 minute! ("nano duel")

GUI

adjust rollover images to prevent obscuring website screenshot

  • make them smaller or semi-transparent
  • rollover image only appears when mouse moves, not just because mouse is over image when it loads
  • gutter between the 2 voting images
  • leaderboard has too much blue
  • use same toolbar below image on both the vote page and the site page (/site/booble.com)
  • change pie charts? PHP/SWF Charts (http://www.maani.us/charts/index.php)
  • boxing gloves onmouseover for vote page

COPY

  • on site submission: faxed Turkmenistan in the text, but in the video the guy answers the phone.

ADMIN SECTION

  • Show thumbnails of other sizes for better error catching
  • only need to show 1 thumbnail as all images are exactly the same just diff sizes.
  • backups of non-source data to remote disk, EG screenshots, mysql
  • dev mysql schema

BACKEND

screenshot library needs work!

  • need timeouts for unresponsive (but resolveable) domains; this hangs screenshot
  • better delay between site load and screenshot
  • -update screenshots to catch sites that changes over time -- expecting to finish this by end-of-week -- done!
  • create screenshots for new sites immediately -- possible now, but we should wait until timeouts are implemented.
  • update library to identify duplicate history screens and ignoe them

LEADER BOARD

  • use bayesian ranking to weight a rating more when a site has a lot of ratings
  • define categories of leaders based on delicious tags
  • leaderboard over rolling time windows; "best of day/week/month/overall"
  • most undecided; pairs of sites w/ lots of 'draw' votes

API

  • simple xml call to return a sites rank
  • so designers can include their site's rank in their footers w/o having to deal with widgets that don't mesh w/ their design
  • a widget / dynamic button with ranking would be nice
  • widget should offer designers customizable css

Other random ideas...

  • I would be interested to see a "New Sites" list. I keep going to the admin section to check. --amit
  • create a 'flickr of design' and this contest would be just one feature - a database of designers and great designs
  • use the site as a kind of a del.icious for screen shots - a scrapbook of sites I like. I could use it for insipiration when designing web sites --lee
  • A widget to add to your site to show its rank
  • Allow people to subscribe (weekly email) to the status of any site, particularly ones they submit, which are probably their own. This can precede user accounts.
  • Allow people to fave sites (requires login)
  • User profile pages keep track of votes and fave list
  • Index of web designers - show all sites by a given designer
  • One-click add a screenshot to your Flickr
  • resolution-dependent thumbnail display (wider than 1024 yields bigger screenshots with more space)
  • auto-pull tags from delicious to enable seamless categorization, tagging!

  • Allow paid comparisons. For example, you could submit a site, or X variations of a site, and/or select some other sites, and quickly get results of which people like the best. Like facebook polling. $10 for instant feeddback from a web-savvy crowd. [Req. traffic]
    • Similarly -- if we can collect gender, location, occupation, age, etc. we can help people identify differences in site design likability across these vectors.

  • Add sub-sections for print design, flyer design, graffti design, biz card design, etc. etc.
    • furniture design, apartment design, product design - use it to find cool stuff to buy

  • This could become a tool to help people find a designer. Let any designer come and submit his/her portfolio (for sites, it'd be a sequence of URLs.) If you're looking for a designer, you come to the site and are presented with screenshots. You keep picking the ones that look better and the system uses smarts to get an idea of what you're looking for, and eventually suggests 3 designers it thinks you'll like. We make an itro, and ask for a commission (or require it maybe.) You could do the same for other kinds of art.
